Etsy - Misleading practices and threats to livelihood
On July 9, 2019 Etsy sellers received a letter from Etsy CEO josh Silverman stating that Etsy will be offering a “free shipping guarantee” beginning on July 30, 2019. He then went on to explain in the memo that sellers didn’t need to REALLY offer free shipping, but instead showed sellers how to add the shipping cost into the product price to recoup that money.
In addition, he further stated that sellers who offer this “free (but not really free) shipping guarantee would be given preferential treatment in search, thereby relegating sellers who can’t afford free shipping or sellers with ethics to the far reaches of search limbo....probably never to be seen again.
What’s truly galling is the attempt to blackmail sellers into offering a free ship guarantee, when, at Etsy’s direction, the shipping isn’t free but is rolled into the price of the item purchased.
Also not taken into consideration are the sellers who sell large items and for whom adding shipping onto the price would mean a huge price increase, effectively pricing them out of their market niche.
Free shipping is fine if you’re not adding the cost of shipping into the price of the item. A better term for full disclosure to the public would be “shipping included”
